What is Text-to-Join?
Text-to-join is the simplest way to grow an SMS marketing list: a customer sends one word — a keyword like JOIN, SAVE10, or VIP — to your business number, and they're subscribed. No forms, no apps, no typing an email address on a phone keyboard.
It matters because the hardest part of SMS marketing isn't sending messages. It's getting people onto your list legally in the first place. Text-to-join solves that in the places links can't reach: a storefront window, a radio ad, a receipt, a poster at an event.
How text-to-join works, in five steps
-
You create a keyword. Pick something short, memorable, and easy to spell. FLUFFSTUFF works for a pet groomer; SAVE10 works for almost any retailer. Avoid words autocorrect will mangle.
-
You promote it. Put the keyword and your number everywhere your customers already look: the counter sign, the receipt footer, your Instagram bio, the radio spot. Add a QR code where scanning is easier than typing.
-
A customer texts the keyword to your number. That text is their opt-in — the legal consent that lets you message them.
-
They get an instant confirmation. This message matters more than most people realize, because US carriers require specific wording (more on that below). AutoCampaign.ai adds the required wording automatically.
-
You send your first campaign. Deliver whatever the sign promised — the discount code, the event updates, the early access. Keep that promise, and unsubscribes stay low.
The compliance checklist
US carrier requirements under the CTIA messaging guidelines — built on the TCPA's consent principles — call for your opt-in confirmation to include:
- Who you are — your business name in the first message.
- What they signed up for — "deals and updates from Riley's Coffee," not vague "notifications."
- How often you'll message — "up to 4 messages per month."
- "Message and data rates may apply" — the standard disclaimer.
- How to leave — "Reply STOP to unsubscribe, HELP for help."
- Links to your terms and privacy policy.
That sounds like a lot, but a good platform appends the required lines automatically — with AutoCampaign.ai's Text-to-Join, the compliance wording is built into every confirmation, and every opt-in is recorded with a timestamp in case you ever need to prove consent.
Three ways to promote your keyword
At the register. A small sign — "Text SAVE10 to 555-0100 for 10% off today" — converts people who are already buying. The discount gives them a reason to join right now.
On the air or on stage. Radio hosts, podcast ads, and event MCs can read a keyword out loud. It's the only list-growth mechanic that works through audio.
On packaging and receipts. Every bag, box, and receipt is free ad space for your keyword. Customers see it at home, exactly when a "come back soon" offer lands best.
Keyword vs. QR code vs. sign-up form
You don't have to choose. A keyword works where people hear or read your promotion; a QR code works where pulling out a camera is natural (tables, posters, packaging); a web form works on your site. The important thing is that all three feed one list with consent recorded — otherwise you end up with three disconnected spreadsheets.
